Since the passing of Maestro Zalce, I have purchased no more of his art, because all art in the "Houston Collection" was obtained directly from him.
But when I spotted a piece of his art from 1937 that he painted
while he was in Manzanillo painting a mural for the Government---well---I had to own it!
(I was only 2 years old in 1937 but I feel like he painted it for me;-)
The small bleached watercolor is definitely not an example of Zalce's best art--to him this was just passing time-- almost doodling. But finding this work of Maestro Zalce was, to me,
like discovering a sunken treasure. It is with much pride that I announce the acquisition of “Manzanillo 1937” for the
"Houston Collection". Bringing this artwork to Mexico was a complicated process, but now it is among my most cherished pieces of art.
